Professional Lawn Core Aeration Services in Calgary

Revitalize Your Lawn with Spring Aeration for Stronger, Greener Lawn

Is your Calgary lawn thin, prone to puddling, or showing signs of stress? The common culprit is soil compaction. Our specialized lawn core aeration services are designed to break up dense soil, allowing your lawn to absorb essential nutrients, water, and oxygen more effectively, leading to dramatically healthier grass

What is Lawn Core Aeration and Why Calgary Lawns Need It

Core aeration involves mechanically removing small cores (plugs) of soil and thatch from your lawn. Most Calgary lawns sit on hard, compacted clay soil, which restricts root growth and water penetration. When soil is compacted, it chokes the grass roots by preventing the movement of water, air, and nutrients. The benefits of aeration:

REDUCES  SOIL COMPACTION

Lawn aeration reduces compaction by mechanically pulling out small plugs or cores of soil, creating tiny tunnels that break up dense, tightly packed dirt. This process physically loosens the soil, relieving the pressure that hinders root expansion and resource access

IMPROVES WATER & NUTRIENT ABSORTION

Instead of water running off or pooling on compacted soil, the channels created by aeration, allow water to soak in more effectively and reach deeper into the root zone. Fertilizers and natural nutrients can now travel down to the roots, maximizing their effectiveness and improving overall soil health.

ENCOURAGES DEEPER ROOT GROWTH

With the physical barriers removed and resources available, grass roots can grow deeper and spread more vigorously, creating a stronger, denser turf.

IMPROVED AIRFLOW

The holes provide pathways for oxygen to reach the roots, which is vital for root respiration and growth, a process choked by compacted soil.

PREPARATION FOR OVERSEEDING OR RESEEDING

The holes are the perfect seedbed for overseeding or reseeding, ensuring excellent seed-to-soil contact for high germination rates.

The Optimal Time for Core Aeration in Calgary

Timing is crucial for successful core aeration. In Calgary, we recommend scheduling this service during the periods of active growth when the grass can quickly heal and take advantage of the reduced compaction.

          1. Spring Aeration: Mid-April to Early June: After the ground has fully thawed and the lawn starts actively growing

         2. Fall Aeration: . Late August and September: Ideal for strengthening roots before winter and helping lawns recover from Summer drought or heat stress

Note: We recommend to avoid aerating during the peak summer heat (July/early August) or during dry periods when the lawn is already stressed.

For properties with inground irrigation systems, we ask clients to mark sprinkler heads, shallow utility lines, and invisible fence wires prior to our arrival to prevent damage. The lawn area also needs to be cleared of any items or obstacles. For better results we advise property owners to water the lawn the day prior to our arrival.

Leave Plugs to Break Down Naturally

The soil plugs are left on the surface of the lawn. This is essential, as the breakdown of these plugs distributes organic matter and beneficial microbes across the lawn, further enhancing soil health.

Lawn Core Aeration in Calgary - FAQ

Lawn aeration is the process of removing small plugs of soil from your lawn to relieve compaction, improve airflow, and allow water and nutrients to reach the root zone more effectively.

Yes. Aeration is one of the best things you can do to improve root health and overall turf quality.

Always aerate before overseeding or fertilizing, for the best seed-to-soil contact.

No, we do not recommend aeration for new lawns, for the first 2 years. The is a risk that the aerator can unseat the sod, or rip it, if sod is not fully rooted.

Signs Your Lawn Needs Aeration:
- Water pooling or poor drainage
- Thinning, patchy, or yellowing areas
- Hard, compact soil that’s difficult to penetrate
- Heavy foot traffic areas
- Slow growth despite watering and fertilizing
- Thatch layer thicker than ½ inch

Most Calgary lawns benefit from aeration once per year, ideally in Spring or Fall. For lawns with extremely compacted soil, we can provide the service twice for the year, or we can provide a double run, in one session.

Immediately after aeration, we recommend grass seed and fertilizer  application. Water properly to help seeds germinate without washing away, while avoiding heavy foot traffic and waiting to mow until new grass is established.

In Calgary, the ideal times to aerate, are in the Spring (Mid-April to Early June) and in the Fall (Late August and September), after the heat of the Summer is over, when temperatures are cooler and grass is actively growing.

We advise home owners to water the lawn one day before the property is scheduled for Lawn aeration, to improve the aeration results. Moist soil allows deeper tine penetration, resulting in longer plugs. If the property has inground sprinkler system, we need the home owners to flag the heads, so we know where they are and not run them over, and damage them, with the aerators. Same goes for any shallow utilities. The lawn area needs to be free of any objects or obstacles.

No, we do not remove the plugs, we leave the plugs to break down naturally. If you pair the core aeration with the power raking service, we can do the aeration first and the power raking second. In this case the power rake will break the plugs and then manually raking the thatch will remove any left overs from the lawn.

Aeration improves soil health but does not revive dead turf. If areas are thin or patchy, pairing aeration with overseeding and fertilization is the best solution.

There are no pre-payments, we email out an invoice after the service has been completed. As for payment, we currently accept e-transfers and cheques.

Yes, bookings can be canceled at any time, prior to scheduled service date. That gives us enough time to replace your property in our schedules, without any down times. However, for unannounced, on spot cancellations we charge a $80 fee.
